As a frontline worker, you already deserve my respect, because you have a tough job. Unfortunately, the pandemic has made things even tougher for physicians like you. Here are a few statistics on physician burnout, wellbeing and the coronavirus pandemic you may find surprising.
Many physicians have faced increasing anxiety due to pandemic uncertainty. In Medscape’s 2021 physician happiness report, about 67% of physicians said they were anxious about their future.
And according to a 2021 survey from The Physicians Foundation, 57% of physicians said they felt angry and anxious because of COVID-19. Meanwhile, 46% reported isolating themselves from others, and 34% of the physicians reported feeling felt hopeless or without a purpose.
In extreme circumstances, uncertainty coupled with a grueling workload can push physicians to have suicidal thoughts. From The Physicians Foundation report:
- About 14% of physicians indicated they know another physician who considered suicide.
- 4% know a physician who attempted suicide.
- 7% know a physician who died by suicide.
If you’re experiencing feelings of unreasonable anger, anxiety or melancholy, don’t ignore the warning signs of physician burnout – reach out to family, friends, or a mental health professional for help as soon as possible.
